To the four corners of England
The furthest one can travel in Great Britain is about 1,000 miles between Land's End in Cornwall and John O'Groats in Scotland. Since 1871 many have made the journey: on horseback, on foot, by bicycle, in a wheelchair.... But William Reddaway went to all four corners of England with his horse, Strider.

La plus grande distance qu’on peut voyager en Grande Bretagne en ligne droit est environ 1.000 miles (1.600 km) entre Land’s End en Cornouaille et John O’Groats en Ecosse. Depuis 1871 plusieurs ont fait ce voyage : à cheval, à pied, en vélo, à fauteuil roulant etc. Mais William Reddaway est allé aux quatre coins de l'Angleterre.

Tim Cope -National Geographic Adventure Honoree 2007, Australian Adventurer of the year 2006 - is a 34 year old Long Rider from Gippsland, Victoria (Australia), who is pursuing a life of adventure, writing, and film. Tim, who speaks fluent Russian, and guides in Siberia, and Mongolia, has spent the best part of a decade travelling Russia, Mongolia, and Central Asia by bicycle, row boat, skis, horse, camel and many other means. Most of all Tim enjoys coming to know people in their home environments by travelling in traditional and local ways. His most renowned journey was a three and a half year odyssey from Mongolia to Hungary by horse on the trail of Genghis Khan and in the spirit of the nomads of the steppe.
Tim Cope est un homme Australien de 34 ans qui poursuivit une vie de l’aventure, de l’écriture et du filme. Il parle couramment le Russe, et a passé presque dix ans voyageant en la Russie, la Mongolie et l’Asie centrale avec un vélo, un bateau à rames, des skis, à cheval et avec des chameaux. Son voyage le plus célèbre était son voyage de trois ans et demi de la Mongolie jusqu’en Hongrie à cheval, sur les pas de Gengis Khan et dans l’esprit des nomades de la steppe.

Lithuania : the come-back of the horse
At the peak of its power, the Soviet Union controlled 22,276,060 kilometres (8,600,835 miles) of territory. The Baltic nation of Lithuania was an unwilling part of this vast empire. Historians have recorded the loss of political rights which Lithuanians endured during fifty years of Soviet oppression. What has not been appreciated is how Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin also crushed the equestrian heritage of Lithuania and the other countries which came under his control.

Au sommet de son pouvoir, l’empire soviétique dirigeait 22 millions de kilomètres carrés de territoires. La nation balte de Lituanie faisait partie de cet empire. Joseph Staline ne s’est alors pas privé d’anéantir son héritage équestre. Aujourd’hui, les cavaliers au long-cours parcourent la région pour tenter de redonner à leurs traditions équestres et surtout à la race nationale tout leur panache.
The German Long Rider Günter Wamser has been travelling on horseback from Patagonia to Alaska since 1994. He thought the journey would take four or five years - but he only finished his trip in 2013!

Many things have changed since our ancestors began to ride thousands of years ago. But stealing a horse still causes a calamity with terrible repercussions. To learn how to guard against this crime it is necessary to understand that horses are stolen for a variety of reasons, including greed, revenge, tribalism, transportation, hunger, prestige and a desire for fame. Regardless of what motivates the culprit, the horse is a prime target in every country.

Catherine Thompson is a horsewoman, musician, author and composer. She has already made two Long Riders in her native Canada. The third one, in 2013, lasted about five months and was completed in September.

DC Vision, a Founding Member of the Long Riders Guild, made a 14,000 mile ride in the USA. This mounted philosopher knew there was more to a journey than mere miles. He wisely said, “They either get it in ten miles or they never get it at all.”
What he was referring to is known as the Long Quiet.

In the twentieth century, France witnessed the rise of her greatest female Long Rider, Evelyne Coquet.

English Long Rider Christine Henchie, 29, was killed instantly on Monday, January 28 2013 by an out-of-control bus in Tanzania. Her fiancé, South African Long Rider Billy Brenchley, 43, escaped death by inches but suffered a broken leg. Traffic is the single greatest danger faced by horsemen.

and the Antarctic for 43 years? Until today, the Polar “experts” have
been pedestrians who do not understand the importance of horses in these
regions. They mistakenly claim equines are not as robust as dogs and that
there is nothing for them to eat on the snow.
But the truth is very different....

The Long Riders Guild is the most important international association for equestrian explorers. Founded in 1994, it gathers together men and women of all nationalities who have made a journey on horseback of more than 1,000 continuous miles. The equestrian explorers who are already Members come from 43 countries and have travelled on all continents except Antarctica.
The Long Riders’ Guild est la plus importante association internationale qui rassemble les explorateurs à cheval. Fondée en 1994, elle rassemble hommes et femmes de toutes nationalités qui ont parcouru à cheval plus que 1 600 kilomètres en un seul voyage. Les voyageurs équestres déjà membres sont issus de 43 pays, et ont voyagé sur tous les continents, sauf l’Antarctique.

The Preservation of Equestrian Travel
I was lucky: I was born around the middle of the twentieth century. I benefited from the wisdom of the cavalry soldiers who taught me to ride. Much of their wisdom, as well as the freedom to travel which they enjoyed, has been lost today. It is essential that we do not forget our rights to ride along the ancient paths. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, it is our duty to protect, preserve and promote equestrian travel everywhere in the world.
J’ai eu de la chance, je suis née au milieu du vingtième siècle. J’ai bénéficié de la sagesse des soldats de la cavalerie qui m’ont enseigné à monter à cheval. Une grande partie de cette sagesse, ainsi que la liberté de voyager, semble désormais perdue. Par égard pour nos enfants et nos petits-enfants, c’est notre devoir de protéger, préserver et promouvoir le voyage équestre à travers la planète. Mais ce combat ne fait que commencer…

Historically the world of equestrian travel has contained an exciting mixture of unique men and women. Some are adventurers seeking danger from the back of their horses. Others are travellers discovering the beauties of the countryside they slowly ride through. A few are searching for inner truths while cantering across desolate parts of the planet. Canadian Long Rider Bonnie Folkins’ mission uses her horse and camera to arrive at a deeper understanding of Central Asia’s remaining nomads.
Parmi la constellation d’explorateurs équestres à travers les siècles, l’étoile de la Québécoise, Bonnie Folkins, est l’une des plus brillantes. C’est une artiste reconnue, avec plus de cinquante expositions aux Etats-Unis, Canada et Portugal. Mais c’est un voyage en Mongolie de l’ouest, en 2007, qui a changé sa destinée. Bien qu’elle ai parcouru l’Italie, l’Inde, l’Australie et l’Amérique Latine, une force irrésistible l’attire désormais vers l’Asie centrale, terre des cavaliers.

When the South African Long Riders Billy Brenchley and Christine Henchie arrived in Uganda in 2011, their horses created a sensation. Tragically, Christine was killed in 2013 in a traffic accident.
