The Long Riders' Guild

Meg Carter is travelling along Route 66 from Oklahoma to Chicago

The following email arrived at The Long Riders' Guild:

I’ve been endurance riding for several years now and want to undertake riding 2/3 of Old Route 66.

Tell me more info about your organization, please. I’ve been training Fancy (TWH) and Sophie (TB) for months…and when the $$ is there to take off from work…I’m setting out.   We have common ground that equine-human relationship should be supported, nourished, cherished and revered!  I want to do this ride FOR MYSELF…but also in memory of those who have mental illness. I have an equine assisted psychotherapy practice on the side…and my staff are my horsey gal pals.. and we are all therapists together

For more information, please visit Meg's website.

Update, August 2008.  Meg has been in touch with Long Riders Howard Wooldridge and Linda Losey, and has sent this update:

All is going great...I have been blessed with host families for almost the first 300 miles...all are no more than 15 miles apart. I'm totally taking my time getting there.  The support is overwhelming!  I've mapped my routes through Oklahoma, driven it one time...and have begun to arrange for "feed drops" at the places or near the places I'm going to stay.

1/3 of the logistical planning is almost complete...all the roads have great wide shoulders and are easy to travel and are no wider than gravel or ONE lane. There is also logistical "Plan B" to some degree in case I can't get to where I'm going for the day for some reason. Then again, I am also expecting the unexpected, too.

Bashirah (one good Arabian pony) did her first 10 miles the other day without batting an eye. She only has been under saddle since June 22nd.  She is ready for SHOES... and will now learn faster moving traffic as her next training feat.  She is FEARLESS and has a displeasure for the arena... and takes me out onto the road without me asking.  She was a BORN LONG RIDER and gets bored sticking around the house!

We've got WINGS now...and are flying...thanks to all of you!

Meg

We wish you luck when the time comes, Meg - please keep us posted!
